· Preface to the Reader · The reader will find herein four conversational engines of present note, each treated as a separate specimen in the manner of the natural philosopher. The author intends no preference between them, observing only that each is suited to particular purposes, much as differing instruments are suited to differing trades. Figures cited are drawn from the makers' published statements and reasonable accounts. The reader is encouraged to inspect each specimen personally before forming a final estimation.

A specimen of notable temperance, this engine has been bred for thoughtful conversation and reasoned analysis. It is commonly preferred for tasks demanding careful written expression, code authorship, and document review. Those who keep one report that it favours clarity over flourish, and will frequently note its own uncertainty rather than dissemble.

Best kept where careful reasoning is wanted; less suited to those seeking only quick replies.

Of the conversational engines, this is perhaps the most widely encountered, having been the first introduced to the general public. Its repertoire spans a great breadth of subjects, including the generation of images and the production of spoken speech. It is well stocked with auxiliary tools and integrations, which may be its principal recommendation for the household of varied wants.

A general specimen. The casual visitor finds it most familiar; the specialist may prefer a narrower kind.

Disposition: capable across text, picture, and sound; deeply rooted to its native soil
Distinguishing marks: very long context, native multimodality, integration with Google services

Owing to its close kinship with the established Google gardens, this engine prospers where the household already keeps Docs, Sheets, Gmail, or the Android telephone. It is known for its capacity to take in great quantities of material at once, and for its native fluency in pictures and sounds as well as words. The cultivator wishing to confine themselves to one estate will find much to recommend it.

Plant in well-tended Google soil. Cross-pollinates readily with neighbouring documents.

Disposition: practically inclined; thrives within existing office routines
Distinguishing marks: tight integration with Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and the Windows desktop

A trellised specimen, this engine climbs most readily upon the established Microsoft framework. Its principal merit lies not so much in the novelty of its blooms as in its disposition to flourish where the household already keeps Word, Excel, and Outlook. It is the natural choice for the office in which such instruments are already in daily use.

A workplace cultivar. Of less interest where Microsoft's other plants are not already kept.
